Things You Should Do + Know Before Going to Brazil: Travel Guide

Below are some tips that I have gathered from multiple sources including my Brazilian mother and my Venezuelan friend, Sofia, on how to survive while traveling through Brazil and South America..

*Note these tips can be applied for all travel destinations.

Update + Receive Recommended Vaccinations:

Make sure to call your Health Insurance Travel Department and see what vaccines they recommend you get prior to your arrival. For Brazil, the Yellow Fever Vaccine is HIGHLY recommended. Be sure to have a copy of your vaccination record before you call to ensure all of your vaccines are updated!

Apply for a VISA:

Brazil is one of the few countries that require US Citizens to have a VISA! Be sure to apply for a visa before you book your trip!

Here's the new and easier electronic visa website for Brazil.

Leave Your Jewelry at Home:

Don't wear any expensive jewelry, watches, earrings, or anything that looks expensive. You will have a higher risk of being robbed if you look like you have expensive things. As Sofia says, "Keep it simple and look like a local. Wear jean shorts, a tank top, and Havaiana's."

Hide Your Money:

Don't keep all of your money on you at one time. Keep your money in different locations. For example, only take the money you need with you and leave the rest hidden in in different spots in your luggage.

Don't be naive:

You can be friendly and make connections with people but do not be naive. Watch your drink if you are out drinking with friends and listen to your gut. Keep your purse in front of your body, not behind you. Do not be that tourist walking around the city with your cell phone in your hand.

Always Go With Your Gut Feeling:

If you have a bad feeling about a certain situation, remove yourself from the situation and learn when to say no. Do not walk alone at night. If you make a wrong turn you can end up in a bad area.

Don't let the news or rumors scare you and prevent you from coming to Brazil or other countries in South America! Brazil is a beautiful country and the people here are very warm and inviting!

Just like anywhere in the world, you need to be alert, use your street smarts, and listen to your gut.

Beijos,

Erin
